Gotta say I'm glad October's over. Such a mixed-up time. One day I'm saying goodbye to my cat, another I'm watching Teddy Tahu Rhodes in a (truly, truly) sublime performance of Mendelssohn's oratorio Elijah. I shed a lot of tears last month, so I'm holding out for a better few weeks.

Still. New page on the calendar and all that. I thought I'd share my two small contributions to the recent [info]bsg_pornbattle. I can't tell you how fun these were to write (except I just did)--and it probably goes without saying, but these are to be taken with a pinch of whatever gets you perky, because me being me, I can't be porny to save myself from the clutches of the porn monster of the deep, so...eye of the beholder. Anyway. Enjoy.

Unreal Love Story BSG/Sense and Sensibility; Laura Roslin/Colonel Brandon; R
For the prompt finally a romantic
That's the thing about hallucinations--they're not quite fantasies, not quite dreams. But damn if they don't surprise her. )

Not Billy BSG/Torchwood; Laura Roslin/Jack Harkness; R
For the prompt: "I've always had a thing for Presidents."
Gods, it was if he was made of cocky self-assurance and just knew it worked... )

Title: Confessions of a Pontiac in Baby Blue
Author: Jen ([info]jazzfic)
Rating: PG
Pairing: James May/Richard Hammond
Words: 7,749
Disclaimer: The characters in this work are based on real people. All depictions herein are entirely fictional, and do not aim to reflect real actions or events.
Summary: In which a race (which isn't), a suggestion (every bit Jeremy's), and a brief fling with tabloid journalism combine to make James believe he's either lost the plot, or the world is simply carrying on as normal.
Notes: My first venture into this sort of fannish enterprise, so I have to admit that the nerves are all a flutter here. Thanks to [info]emmi_tennant for the beta, and to [info]lalumena for words of encouragement.

In James's fantasies, the only reason he knocked the model train off its tracks was for the excuse to set it all up again from scratch. )

Title: Five battles Mal fought for the losing side (and won)
Author: Jen ([info]jazzfic)
Rating: PG
Characters/Pairings: Mal (hints of Mal/River)
Words: 1,523
Disclaimer: None of it is mine, as usual, I merely borrow.
Notes: [info]serenity_santa gift for my dear [info]whatever_we_are. To say I was thrilled to get to write for you is somewhat of an understatement. You have always been so supportive to me, and a wonderful beta reader--any mistakes here, of course, are all mine :D Merry Christmas.
Summary: In times of difficulty, he tells the others that their refuge is this ship. He will never admit that his own is denial.

The last of the shells are still fizzing in the earth, when he finally accepts the order to stop. )

I was beginning to wonder if I could write anything these days that wasn't just a shopping list. When in doubt, return to where you started.

All Motion Stopped, Firefly: River, Mal; PG; 1,102 words
For [info]fireworkfiasco, who is clever and talented and wrote the first paragraph, and very generous to let me play with the rest.

He has rolled the sleeves of his shirt to his elbows; the skin on his arms is brown from the sun, time spent on earth-bound places that River so rarely sees, not these days, when she only seems to be proficient at hiding from real things, the reality of what is out there.

When people look at her, they see a bit of crazy and a lot of strange as her eyes flirt and fall away. )

Title: Returning to the Point Halfway
Author: Jen ([info]jazzfic)
Rating: PG
Characters: Robin, John, Allan, Much
Words: 1,094
Disclaimer: Never mine, I'm just borrowing them for a while.
Summary: Home is a hard place to come back to.

He follows behind the others, drawing his cloak tight in thin defense to the wind, which rustles through as if a welcome and stern reminder in one. It is familiar ground; if the King were to be transplanted from his desert battlement, Allan thinks, he would not find the war so different here. )

At this rate, I'm going to have these requests done by, oh, the next millennium. And I know I said ficlets, so...just imagine this is smaller than it is ;)

The Man in the Mirror, PG, 1791 words
For [info]telynmurali; Doctor Who; Jack, Nine, Ten--sunshine and puppies.
In which our Hero hides from the rain, gets waylaid by eager salesman...and meets a stranger who's strangely familiar.

There was a man in the mirror. There was a man in the mirror, and that man wasn't Jack. )

Title: The Eyes Don't See
Author: Jen ([info]jazzfic)
Rating: PG
Characters: Simon/Inara
Words: 785
Disclaimer: They're Joss's creations, as ever.
Summary: He tries, to no result. He tries and nobody listens.
Notes: A late entry into the Firefly prompt-a-thon, for the prompt Simon/Inara, curiosity.

This is what doubt is made of--hands where hands don't belong, an impolite breach of everything that is good, and right, and known. )

Feeling terribly apathetic and uncreative this week (I don't think I could write ten words together that didn't make me annoyed at my inability to be even slightly original). Anyway, today I ended up with this, which I felt good enough about to share.

Title: Waiting on a Promise
Author: Jen ([info]jazzfic)
Rating: PG
Characters: Robin/Marian
Words: 667
Disclaimer: This is the musings of a fan who claims no ownership.
Summary: When young men leave for the crusades, they can only look forward. They surrender to it, and it blinds them forever.

It was said without warning and without apology: when you wake, my love, I'll be gone. )

Title: Impulses of Fear and Flight
Author: Jen ([info]jazzfic)
Rating: PG
Characters: Much, Marian
Words: 2,250
Disclaimer: Stamped property of the BBC and Tiger Aspect, beyond which all mistakes are mine.
Summary: Much discovers that being stuck between the feelings of two people isn't fun at all--especially when they play havoc on his own.
Notes: For [info]clanne. Happy Birthday :)

Marian was seventeen years old. Much might be older by five years, and taller by a good hand-span, but she had long since shot past him in standing. )

Summary: Robin wants the perfect gift for Marian. Much just wants to go home.

Title: Let Silence Pass
Author: Jen ([info]jazzfic)
Rating: PG
Characters/Pairing: Much/Eve
Words: 3,166
Spoilers: For 2x12/13.
Disclaimer: Belonging to the BBC, and not a scrap of it mine.
Summary: There's always somebody waiting for the ones who are gone.
Notes: Written for the [info]rh_ficchallenge for the prompt resolution. And because I don't like to see secondary characters dropped like pebbles. And yes, I'm a sap, and just want a happy ending for everyone.

She wished they had not spoken of birthdays and feeding the villagers; for what little hope it was worth, she would have held him there in the street, if she'd known he might never come back. )

Disclaimer: The BBC and Tiger Aspect own it all, I'm just borrowing things.
Notes: This is about Much looking back to when Robin announced his engagement. Slightly AU, set at a short point in the future. Originally posted for the [info]treatmuchright ficathon.

Title: The Special Kind
Author: Jen ([info]jazzfic)
Rating: PG
Pairing: Mal/Kaylee
Words: 4,417
Disclaimer: The characters belong to Joss, I'm just playing around with things.
Summary: All love stories must begin somewhere; Kaylee's is no different.
Notes: [info]serenity_santa gift for [info]lusciouspandora. This is the first time I've attempted Mal/Kaylee, so I'm very nervous about it all, to say the least (although it did turn out to be more Kaylee/Serenity/Mal than anything...OT3 anyone?). Anyway, I do hope you like it.

That it had been an inglorious first meeting was an undeniable fact. )

Title: A Thing of Simple Feeling
Author: Jen ([info]jazzfic)
Rating: PG
Pairings: Will/Marian, Will/Djaq, Much/Djaq
Words: 2,167
Spoilers: For 2x10 'Walkabout'
Disclaimer: Property of the BBC, and all those who make awesome television out of British legends. And not a scrap of it belongs to me.
Summary: Will Scarlett contemplates the women in his life.
Notes: [info]secretsheriff gift for [info]velvet_midnight. I admit that at first I didn't know how I was going to handle Will's POV, as he's not a character I've ever written before. But I think it all worked itself out in the end. Fingers crossed, anyway. I do hope you like it.

Had she taken Gisborne's hand and accepted his proposal, Will knows he'd have done nothing to stop her, or cared in the slightest as to what Robin's reaction might have been. )

Disclaimer: I am borrowing what isn't mine, which is everything.
Summary: There is something in his expression that stops her from asking more, that makes her wish she had known him before this, before he'd had promises made and then broken.

In the earliest hours, sounds are carried through the forest like an echo of a drum. )

Words: 1,540
Disclaimer: Not my creations.
Summary: She wonders how real life could equal fairy-tales, for they certainly don't exist today.
Notes: For my dear [info]ninamazing, on her birthday.

The impressionable girl inside of her still feels admiration, still feels nervous at his amazing self-assurance; but as a woman Marian looks upon this thing they share as a sort of prelude to marriage, kept entirely in secret. )

Title: This Little World

Words: 2,034
Disclaimer: Not mine, I'm just borrowing them for a while.
Summary: There are some problems in life that can't be mended in a day.
Notes: My first foray with these two characters, so I hope I did them justice.

She takes in the sight of him, stretched out and moody, indifferent to everything and everyone outside his own private frustrations. He has the look of someone who has missed something of great importance, and wants the world to quietly disappear for a few hours while he sets things right again in his mind. )

Words: 2,101
Disclaimer: Not my creations.
Spoilers: For episode 2x01.
Summary: Wherein Much can't sleep, Robin can't communicate, Allan acts as an unsuspecting sounding board, and the pot boils over.
Notes: This turned out a little strangely for me, I think the tone bounces from comedy to sadness a bit too quickly. Oh well, blame insomnia!

'I like carrots,' Much said cheerily. 'Carrots don't talk. They don't judge you, or natter away behind your back. They are entirely without opinion or malice. They simply exist...to grow, and be eaten. One of God's most glorious creations.' )

Title: Crush
Author: Jen ([info]jazzfic)
Rating: PG
Characters: River, Mal
Words: 1,382
Disclaimer: They're Joss's creations, as ever.
Summary: At first there is silence, time and action running at half-speed. The accident, when it happens, comes entirely without warning.

There is no noise here. The feeling of joy she had felt earlier on has quickly been crushed, irreversibly, by the laws of physics. No other way to see it. No culpability but bad luck, a short circuit and a storm, lighting up the night sky and bringing their shuttle directly back to earth. )
